The ICOM is the interface for the repair of BMW and MINI vehicles recommended by BMW. The tool comes with an LAN cable to connect to your network and can also be used over wi-fi. So the version number of the ISTA you get becomes important. This ICOM is the head that connects to a vehicle’s OBD connection and communicates over the network to your diagnosis and programming computer. But newer versions merge the two, then you might find the very newest merged versions don't fully support the E6x very well anymore. ![]() They used to be separate, one for diagnostics and one for programming and coding. The whole ISTA-D and ISTA-P thing is also confusing. Perhaps it's just experience but I think I've been using ISTA for longer than I used DIS. ISTA-D is great if you have a fault code and will immediately take you to the tests and information you need.but if you just want to check something like the DPF back pressures or battery condition and there isn't a fault it can be a quite a challenge to find what you need. I also find ISTA-D harder to navigate (yes hardered than DIS) if you don't have a fault present for the thing you are investigating. ISTA-D is much easier to install but in some cases it does a little less than DIS V57 on an E60. On an E6x you won't get any more from ISTA-D. ![]() As Clavurion says if you have working DIS you may as well stick with it.
